What is Navi iRae ?

Navi iRae is a control panel that provides menus, when you command-click in a window's title region, that lets you navigate through the path of the file, just like in the Finder. "Navi iRae" just looks for an opened file with the same name as the window's one.

If it finds several opened files with the same name, it displays a menu with every file match in submenus.

Some applications, when opening a file, copy its content in a temporary file, and then close it (eg. Photoshop, Illustrator, Canvas, GraphicConverter…). In version 1.1.x it made them impossible to see for Navi iRae. But not anymore ! Now Navi iRae now looks for recently opened files to find them. Beware ! There's not complete guarantee this is the real file.

Beware, for best results you'll need an utility that keeps track of recently opened files. You have several choices supported by Navi iRae :
  • Apple Menu Options : no special setting required
  • OtherMenu :no special setting required
  • BeHierarchic 4.0 : be sure to check the option "Apple Menu Option Compatible"

For all of them, be sure that the option to keep track of files is checked in the control panel. For best results, increase the number of recent files. 20 should be plenty enough

Version history

Changes in version 1.8.2 (Januray 2002)

- The submenus now use the same font as in the Finder views so non Roman languages should display correctly.
- Aliases are displayed in italic in the menus.
- Dropped support for Stuffit archives (nobody used it and it was only limited to the first level....).

Changes in version 1.8.1 (August 2001)

- Now displays some more information if the file is locked.
- While building a large menu, the action can be cancelled by a big movement of the mouse (±40 pixels horizontally or vertically).
- Redesigned control panel.

Changes in version 1.8 (March 2000)

Recomplied with the brand new Stuffit SDK 5.5 that brings full compatibility with Mac OS 9 when viewing Stuffit archives.

Changes in version 1.7.1 (March 2000)

An API is now available for third-party developers.
This API is used to enhance DeskTray 1.3.

Changes in version 1.7 (February 2000)

Navi iRae is now multi-users saavy.
Added support for Corel PhotoPaint.
Corrected problems with Jade and FrameMaker.

Changes in version 1.6.5 (September 1999)

When Navi iRae's menu was activated by "Click&hold", command-clicking in a Finder's window title didn't bring the Finder's own path menu (the one provided by default by the Finder when Navi iRae is not enabled). Fixed.

Changes in version 1.6.4 (August 1999)

Fixed the problem of disappearing icons in Finder windows.

Changes in version 1.6.3 (July 1999)

Should completely solve the crashs that some users experienced when releasing the mouse inside or outside Navi iRae's menu

Changes in version 1.6.2 (June 1999)

Some Stuffit archive were not correctly recognized. Fixed.
Fixed a potential problem that could cause crash just after selecting an item from the menu (this bug has nothing to do with the incompatibility with Snitch mentionned above).

Changes in version 1.6.1 (June 1999)

Added an option to display detailed size (data fork + resource fork)
When viewing the content of a Stuffit archive, the modification date of the archive was modified. Fixed.

Changes in version 1.6 (April 1999)

Added support for Photoshop 4 & 5, Jade and FrameMaker.
Added support for Stuffit 5 archives.
Added the option to force opening a file using the front application when selected from Navi iRae's menu.

Changes in version 1.5.6 (March 1999)

When Navi iRae's menu was activated by command+click, the menu could appear several times. Fixed.
When a document was opened using the Navigation Services, Navi iRae didn't resolve the alias of that opened file completely. Fixed.

Changes in version 1.5.5 (March 1999)

Addressed a second problem with unmounted volumes.
When more than one opened file was found, the submenus could be incorrect. Fixed.

Changes in version 1.5.4 (February 1999)

Now unmounted volume are correctly handled, and the dialog to insert the volume won't appear anymore.
Small improvements in the activation of Navi iRae.

Changes in version 1.5.3 (January 1999)

When the user had chosen not to display the folder contents, Navi iRae was still building the submenus which lead to slowdowns and disk intensive use. Fixed.
When several choices were proposed, the submenus were not working. Fixed.
The command key is once again allowed to activate Navi iRae's menu. But be warned, although it is not harmful, it can conflict with some others applications.
Navi iRae now correctly recognize PC volumes and don't display anymore false creator/types...
In the english version the size is correctly displayed in Kb/Mb instead of Ko/Mo.
Navi iRae now checks at startup if OS 8.5 is running to avoid crashes on OS 8.0 or 8.1 (it wasn't always clearly specified on download sites that OS 8.5 was needed from v1.5 of Navi iRae).

Changes in version 1.5.2 (January 1999)

From version 1.5 the activation of Navi iRae's menu was only by clic&hold. But this made Navi iRae incompatible with TitlePop. I've added an option to activate the menu by a simple clic with modifier keys excluding the command key.

Changes in version 1.5.1 (for OS 8.5) & 1.2.5 (for OS 8.0 and 8.1) (December 1998)

In some applications that add some characters after the file name, Navi iRae could crash. Bug fixed. That bug forced me to create a version 1.2.4 for people that were not using OS 8.5.
In submenus, Navi iRae didn't recognize folder aliases whose name was different from the orignal file name. Fixed.

Changes in version 1.5 (December 1998)

Code rewritten to take advantage of the Icon Services and of the Menu Manager 2.0.
The only way to activate Navi iRae's menu is now click&hold for better compatibility. Some applications have included their own path's menu that you can activate by command-click (Stuffit deluxe, Code Warrior, Graphic Converter), and command-clicking will now display that original menu.
Navi iRae's menu can appear in the Finder with more information about the folders.
Navi iRae's menu is now hierarchical and can display th content of folders.
